What is RAM and how much do you actually need?

By Ali Abdollahi · · 2 min read

RAM is one of the most-asked-about computer parts: "how much do I need?" and "should I upgrade?". Before the numbers, let's get the concept right.

What is RAM?

RAM is the computer's working, temporary memory. Programs that are open right now and the data the CPU constantly needs live there, because RAM is extremely fast. Power the machine off and its contents vanish. Storage (an HDD or SSD) keeps files permanently (HDD or SSD?).

An analogy: RAM is your desk surface, storage is the cabinet. The bigger the desk, the more papers you can keep open at once.

What happens when RAM runs out?

When RAM fills up, Windows writes part of the data to the disk temporarily (the page file). That is far slower than RAM, so the computer stutters and programs answer late. On an old hard drive the slowdown gets worse.

How to see your RAM usage

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and check Performance → Memory. If usage sits near 100% during normal work, you are short on RAM. The Processes tab shows which program consumes the most; a browser with many tabs is usually the leader.

How much is enough?

The numbers below are approximate and depend on the kind of work:

Use caseRough target
Web, email, office, video8 GB
Several heavy apps at once, programming, photo editing16 GB
Video editing, virtual machines, large projects32 GB or more

Gaming depends on the games and the rest of the system; read each game's recommended specs. 4 GB is usually too little for modern Windows, and browsers eat a lot.

Buying and upgrading tips

  • Type (DDR4, DDR5…) must match the motherboard; check the board or laptop specs before buying.
  • New laptops sometimes solder the RAM to the board — not upgradeable; pick enough capacity up front.
  • Two modules (dual channel) usually outperform one module of the same total size, thanks to higher bandwidth.
  • Higher frequency matters less than "enough capacity"; capacity first.
  • Before upgrading, check whether slowness is really the RAM; swapping an old HDD for an SSD often helps more.

Common questions

Does more RAM make a computer faster? Only when the current RAM is running out. If usage never gets close to full, adding RAM changes little.

Do "RAM cleaner" apps help? No. The operating system manages RAM itself; RAM cleaners are usually useless.
